Bursting Our Bubbles: Bible-Based Dialogues — Begins February 26 at 9:00 am in the Church House Parlor

The 2016 American presidential election cycle and subsequent events have highlighted a situation that has been building for a number of years: We are living in an increasingly polarized society, with strongly divided opinions on key public issues.  Many have observed that we are increasingly living in “bubbles,” where we interact almost exclusively with others of the same persuasion and find the views of those outside out own chosen community of contacts incomprehensible.   This series of discussions will consider ways we can escape our bubbles by using the Bible as a resource to consider how we can talk to those whose viewpoints are different from ours and to explore opposing views about some controversial current public issues.

  • February 26 How can we converse with those whose beliefs and convictions differ from ours?
  • March 5 Can we really trust “elites,” trained experts, and those in powerful positions?
  • March 12 Special event at 4 PM (no meeting in the morning): “Religion and Politics in America,” a talk by Dr. Robin W. Lovin, Senior Fellow, Center of Theological Inquiry, Princeton University and Cary Maguire University Professor of Ethics, Emeritus, and formerly Dean of the Perkins Divinity School at Southern Methodist University and of the Theological School at Drew University.  Dr. Lovin is a world-renowned expert on Christian ethics and the relationships between religion, law, and government.
  • March 19 What makes a nation great?
  • March 26 Should we welcome or restrict access to immigrants and refugees?
  • April 2 Should we accept or try to alleviate income inequality?
  • April 9 How can we cope with disturbing and disruptive changes?
